First week work

Time line

First of all, I made a simple arrangement for the seven weeks. I hope I have enough time to explore the city and collect materials.

City selection

未标题-7.png

As I have reached Edinburgh, I chose Edinburgh as my main place to explore. The blue dot is where I live now

Dis:I can't fully understand the local culture and history very quickly

Ad:I have a new perspective on the city, have plenty of time and I am very curious. I will have a different interpretation of some things that the local people are used to

Next:Do research on the city background, keep curiosity, and turn "unfamiliar" into an advantage

Background research

Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, which has been managed by Edinburgh World Heritage since 1999.

TOPIC DISCUSSION

The unknown interesting things on the map

Cartography involves aesthetics, science and politics. They can't be separated from each other.

But “Map are not complete, definite, closed definitions - enough they are presented - and it is necessary to question them, prospect them and act on them.“So, when I went out of my way of reading maps and tried not to read the text and information, and let it become simple graphics and lines in my eyes, I saw a duck and an elephant in this Edinburgh map

Under this theme, I hope my works can be presented in a magazine. I will explore the city along the "elephant" route, marking every interesting spot. I will combine photography, painting, video recording, interview and other means to record the city on the "elephant" route, and finally make it into an exclusive city exploration guide. At the same time, I will collect some special items on these streets, such as leaves, unique land texture, or souvenirs from some shops, and finally put them in this magazine.

Some records of me exploring the city along the route

TOPIC DISCUSSION

Soil specimen

Sherlock “tells at a glance different soils from each other. After walks, has shown me splashes upon his trousers and told me by their color and consistence in what part of London he had received them.” As early as I was a child reading novels, I was very interested in the different soils of London. So maybe I can focus my urban exploration on the soil of Edinburgh, which would be very interesting.

Every piece of soil has its own characteristics. It has different pH, different humidity, different components, different particles. On the one hand, I hope to analyze and record them from a chemical point of view. On the other hand, I will investigate and collect the history and development behind these soils.

Some texture of soil

Finally, the presentation of works of art may be a manual on soil / an exhibition on soil, which will include an introduction to the most common soils in Edinburgh, as well as some art works about soil, such as collecting soil texture, drawing through soil, and a map of Edinburgh through soil collage.
