The emergence, development and disappearance of language
  • Gradual language death: the most common way that languages die. Generally happens when the people speaking that language interact with a higher prestige language speakers. This group of people first becomes bilingual, then with newer generations the level of proficiency decreases. And later no native speakers exist.

How?

Anthropologist Akira Yamamoto has identified nine factors that he believes will help prevent language death:[16]

  1. There must be a dominant culture that favors linguistic diversity

  2. The endangered community must possess an ethnic identity that is strong enough to encourage language preservation

  3. The creation and promotion of programs that educate students on the endangered language and culture

  4. The creation of school programs that are both bilingual and bicultural

  5. For native speakers to receive teacher training

  6. The endangered speech community must be completely involved

  7. There must be language materials created that are easy to use

  8. The language must have written materials that encompass new and traditional content

  9. The language must be used in new environments and the areas the language is used (both old and new) must be strengthened

The vulgar characters of Wu language are the folks who spontaneously seek or create Chinese characters that meet the status of Wu's pronunciation and rhyme out of the need to record spoken information.

It is a wrong usage to imitate the pronunciation of Wu dialect with Mandarin pronunciation, which obliterates the trans-epochal and super-linguistic ideographic effect of Chinese characters. The reason for this situation is that, firstly, because of the imperfect language education since childhood, the school only uses Mandarin for teaching, which makes people equate Mandarin pronunciation with Chinese characters; secondly, after the early attempts to create characters in Wu language, the existence of Wu language There is an obvious faulty layer, and there is indeed still a lack of a writing environment.

I found a Wu language input method made by a programmer.

The invention relates to a Pinyin scheme and a keyboard layout of Wu Shanghai dialect input method, in particular to a Shanghai dialect input method and a keyboard layout on a mobile device. This Pinyin coding method includes a set of initial consonants and finals of Wu dialect. The initial consonants of Qinghua dialect are composed of voiced consonants and unvoiced tones, and the final consonants of entering tone are composed of final consonants and ending consonants of entering tone. The final consonants of unvoiced tone and entering tone are input with a unvoiced tone symbol and an entering tone symbol respectively. The Shanghai dialect input method solves the problems of long Pinyin and ambiguous Pinyin segmentation in Wu dialect.

In my opinion, the main problems of wu language are as follows:


1. The Pinyin input method can not solve the daily writing problems, which makes the language "closed in the computer" language.

2. It is very difficult for young people to pick up the rare Chinese characters that have not been used for hundreds of years to write wu language. Writing all the wu language words into Chinese characters can only increase the difficulty of learning and the psychological resistance of young people to learn wu language.

3. The mixed placement of Latin letters and Chinese characters has been proven to be unworkable in modern Chinese applications over the years. Moreover, the inconsistency of the Latin alphabets that cannot be arranged vertically will reduce the flexibility of the layout of the wu language.


4. Latinization will increase the difficulty of reading, because the Latin alphabet only expresses the sound but not the meaning.


5. There are fewer and fewer words to communicate with foreign words, and lack of vitality and boring.
